Start with a useful project brief
You do not need a formal requirements document. A short, honest explanation of the situation is enough to begin.
Include what you know
- What are you trying to build, repair, replace, or automate?
- Who will use it?
- What happens today?
- What is slow, expensive, risky, or frustrating?
- Which systems, vendors, accounts, or data sources are involved?
- Is there a deadline, launch event, contract, or operational dependency?
- Which languages and locations are involved?
- Who can approve scope, content, access, and final acceptance?
- What would make the project clearly successful?
Do not send secrets in the first message
Do not email passwords, API keys, private customer records, regulated data, production exports, or confidential credentials. Secure access methods can be established after the engagement is qualified.
What happens next
1. I review the problem and identify missing information. 2. We determine whether the project is a credible fit. 3. I outline discovery, technical direction, major risks, and next decisions. 4. Scope, price, timing, deliverables, ownership, and support are documented in writing.
